Orange Bowl History

The college football bowl season has a few longtime star performers. Once the Rose Bowl established itself on the West Coast, it was no surprise that other groups would follow the formula. The first city to take on the challenge of hosting a major bowl game was Miami, in January of 1933, and in 1935, their game became the Orange Bowl. Originally played in Miami Field Stadium, it moved into its own stadium, also known as the Orange Bowl, in 1938. A upper deck was added to the Orange Bowl Stadium in 1948. The Orange Bowl in 1965 became the first major bowl game to be played at night and it's been a night game ever since.

From 1953 through 1963 and 1975 through 1994, it featured the Big 8 champion against an at-large opponent. During the intervening years, the Big 8 champion or runner-up often played in the Orange Bowl, but did not get an automatic invitation.The Orange Bowl Game was moved to Pro Player Stadium in 1997, which is in Ft. Lauderdale.

Pro Player Stadium displays its versatility every year by hosting a wide variety of events. Along with Miami Dolphins football and Florida Marlins baseball, college football takes the field with the FedEx Orange Bowl. Super Bowl XXXIII was held at Pro Player Stadium January 31, 1999 as were two other Super Bowls. Florida Atlantic University Football also calls Pro Player Stadium their home.

Federal Express (FedEx) has sponsored the Orange Bowl game since 1989 and is now known as the FedEx Orange Bowl. This move did not change the basic structure of the game, which continued to be dominated by appearances by Miami University, Florida State and the University of Florida. 2011 Orange Bowl Winner

Stanford outscored Virginia Tech 27-0 after intermission to run away with a 40-12 win the Orange Bowl in the first-ever BCS bowl appearance for the Cardinal. Stanford claimed its first 12-win season in history while Virginia Tech was prevented from doing the same. In the process, the Hokies' 11-game winning streak came to a crashing halt and the Cardinal pocketed their 8th straight win.
