Rose Bowl History and facts

The Rose Bowl, formally Pasadena Tournament of Roses is the oldest college football bowl game in American history. In 1897, the city of Pasadena purchased ten acres of land located in the Arroyo Seco area of Pasadena, CA. This site turned out to be exactly what the Tournament of Roses Association needed. In 1921, it was decided that building should commence, and the structure was built with the south end open, giving the stadium a "horseshoe" shape. The design of the stadium was intended to accommodate as many patrons as possible, sitting close to the action. The first portion of the stadium was completed for less money than had been budgeted, and the seating capacity at the time was 57,000. The Tournament financed the project by offering ten-year subscription tickets for $100 each. Once it was completed, it was deeded to the city of Pasadena.

Local newspaper reporter Harlan "Dusty" Hall, who also served as the Tournament's press agent, came up with the name "Rose Bowl" for the stadium, and on January 1, 1923, the Tournament held its first football game there.

The Rose Bowl, known as The Granddaddy of All Bowl Games, has been one of football top sports betting events since 1947. That year's contest was the first game played under the Tournament's exclusive agreement with the Big Ten and Pacific Coast Conferences. (The Pacific Coast Conference's name was changed to Pacific-8 in 1968, and to Pacific-l0 in 1978.) The 1998 Rose Bowl Game was the 52nd anniversary of that agreement, the longest standing tradition of any collegiate conference and a bowl association.

For many years the game was televised by NBC; since 1988 it has aired on ABC. In 1998, the game began being known as The Rose Bowl Game presented by AT&T and in 2002 as The Rose Bowl Game presented by PlayStation 2. Since 2005, when the agreement with Sony expired, the BCS Rose Bowl game has been Presented by Vizio.
