The Pimlico Race Track is home of the Preakness Stakes, the Pimlico first opened its doors on October 25, 1870. It is the second oldest racetrack in the U.S. The first was Saratoga, upstate New York in 1864. The Pimlico racetrack was engineered by General John Ellicott and has hosted legendary horses such as Man O' War, Sir Barton, Sea Biscuit, War Admiral, Citation, Secretariat, Cigar and Silver Charm. The Pimlico is constructed on 70 acres overlooking the Jones Falls, the Maryland Jockey Club purchased the land for $23,500, and built the racetrack for $25,000 Still today the Maryland Jockey Club is dedicated to presenting the great sport of Thoroughbred racing as the centerpiece of a high-quality entertainment experience providing fun and excitement in an inviting and friendly atmosphere for people of all ages.
Marking the 136th running of the $1 million Preakness Stakes, this year's run for the Black Eyed Susans brought together the top finishers from the Kentucky Derby for the second jewel of the Triple Crown. After Animal Kingdom's stunning victory at the Kentucky Derby, the once-underdog entered the Preakness as the favorite to win, but fell just short of victory and finished three quarters of a length behind Shackleford at the finish.
With Shackleford's upset, it was jockey Jesus Castanon's first Triple Crown win of his career. And actually, it was his first Grade 1 win of any kind, which made his and Shackleford's victory that much sweeter. What was interesting about Shackleford is that the Preakness' crew had a tough time getting him into his post position. He kept fighting the gate workers and yet, he came out of the gates screaming and he didn't wavier too much on his way to victory.
Martin Garcia won Preakness Stakes 135
There were two major changes in this years 2011 Triple Crown Races, the Kentucky Derby 2011 Winner Super Saver was the favorite to win the Preakness Stakes and Looking at Lucky was a favorite at the Kentucky Derby. Instead Lookin at Lucky became the 136th Preakness Stakes winner and Super Saver won the Kentucky Derby.
Looking at Lucky was a favorite at the Kentucky Derby, but the muddy track didn’t help him at all in fact with his jockey Garrett Gomez they finished sixth, but at the Preakness he was ridden by Martin Garcia while Gomez rode Dublin. Lookin at Lucky took home the title and a purse worth $1,100,000.
Trained by Bob Baffert Lookin at Lucky had an awesome race when he finished the 1 3/16 miles in just 1:55:47 just 3/4 length ahead of First Dude.
The other positions were the third place of Jackson Ben, 4th Yawanna Twist, 5th Dublin, 6th Paddy O’Prado, 7th Caracortado, 8th Super Saver, 9th Schoolyard Dreams, 10th Aikenite, 11th Pleasant Prince, and 12th Norther Giant.
