The Players Championship Golf History:
In 1974 the inaugural event was held at Atlanta Country Club in Marietta, Georgia. Later it was moved to Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas in 1975, and then to Inverrary Country Club in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, in 1976. Starting from 1977, the event was moved to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Initially, it was played at Sawgrass Country Club's Oceanside Course. After 1982 it was held in the neighborhood of Sawgrass Country Club, at the Stadium Course at the Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass.

2012 Matt Kuchar wins Players Championship
Matt Kuchar became the latest US player to stake his claim on this years TPC Championship at Sawgrass, completing a two-shot victory at the Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida and taking home $1.7 million winner's check.
He made birdies at four, nine, 12 and 16 to take control of the event and survived a nervous finish after a bogey on the famous 17th hole island green at TPC Sawgrass but he made a clutch par on the last to shoot a two-under-par 70 and finish at 13 under, good enough to finish two shots clear of four challengers and collect his fourth US PGA Tour victory. Four players, including the US-based Scot, Martin Laird, finished in a tie for second while Luke Donald came sixth after a six-under 66 that included a back nine of 30.
2011 Players Championship Results
On Sunday, Choi won the biggest tournament of his career on the famous island green at the 17th hole of the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. Choi finished off a two-putt from 41 feet with a 3-footer to win The Players Championship on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff against David Toms, who three-putted from 19 feet. Choi, who turns 41 on Thursday, won for the eighth time on the PGA Tour. On a course where no one can get too cozy as danger lurks everywhere, Choi, a former weightlifter and known as the Tank, remained steadfast and made two bogeys in a final-round 70 to finish at 13-under-par 275 with Toms (70). He made a 5-footer for par on the 72nd hole to get into the playoff. Choi played 28 holes in all Sunday because the third round had to be completed in the morning after Saturday storms delayed play. Toms played 31. Paul Goydos, who lost a playoff to Sergio Garcia in the 2008 Players, closed with a 69 to finish third at 11 under. Luke Donald and Nick Watney shared fourth at 10 under.
2010 Players Championship Results
In 2010, Tim Clark won the Players Championship for his first PGA Tour victory. In his 206th start on Tour, the scrappy, 5-7 South African came up big on the Tour's biggest stage with a bogey-free 67, the lowest score. Clark finished at 16-under-par 272, one shot ahead of Robert Allenby. Lucas Glover, with a late charge that included a 48-foot birdie on the 17th hole, finished third. Lee Westwood, the overnight leader, made double bogey on the 17th en route to a 74 and a tie for fourth.
Clark won $1.71 million of the $9.5 million purse, the largest on Tour this season. He also became the sixth foreign player to win The Players since 2002.
2009 Players Championship Results
In 2009, Henrik Stenson Wins The Players Championship 2009, The victory marked the Swede’s 10th professional career win and by far the biggest. Sunday at Sawgrass, he strolled all the way to a 4-shot victory at The Players Championship. Stenson finished at 12-under 276 and earned $1.71 million for a victory that moves him to No. 5 in the world ranking.
Clark played the final 26 holes without a bogey and set a Stadium Course record with the largest 36-hole comeback at TPC Sawgrass. With an 8-foot par putt on the final hole for a 5-under 67, he no longer had the distinction as the richest player without a PGA Tour victory.
Allenby had the best chance to catch him, but ended up a stroke back. He narrowly missed an 18-foot eagle putt on the 16th hole to tie for the lead. His next chance came on the 17th until a 12-foot birdie putt peaked into the cup and tilted back away. Allenby couldn't make birdie on the tough 18th, and had to settle for a 70.
Clark became only the second player to make The Players Championship his first PGA Tour victory. He had gone more than eight years and 204 tournament with nothing more to show than eight runner-up finishes
