Pennsylvania 500, Sunday Aug. 2

Sign Up Click HereThe NASCAR Sprint Cup Series returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 7 with the Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 at
Pocono Raceway
in Long Pond, Penn. The race date was shifted from the traditional July date to August. This was to be able to change dates with the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, the race before the Pennsylvania 500 race. For complete odds and track information on this year’s event, see below.

At the Pennsylvania 500, the best drivers in the world push their vehicles to the limit. These are drivers averaging upwards of one hundred miles per hours, making minute adjustments to steering with only fractions of seconds to react. There is no telling what's going to happen when the starting flag drops, when it comes to high-speed betting action at Pocono Raceway. The Pennsylvania 500 is the second of two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car races held at the Pocono Raceway, the other being the Pocono 500. Located in the beautiful Pocono mountains, this unique and triangular track always provides fans with exciting Sprint Cup action!

Pocono Raceway's unique 2.5-mile tri-oval asphalt surface, features three turns, each with a different degree of banking, and three straight, each with a different length. The race is full of lead changes especially with the long straightaway and wide Pit Road. This combination produces fender-to-fender action in the turns, 200 mph slingshots on the long straights and photo-finish endings. Which driver will race home with the win at the Pennsylvania 500? NASCAR NEXTEL Cup racing at Pocono is what great stock car racing is all about.

BRAD KESELOWSKI WINS THE GOOD SAM RV INSURANCE 500Brad Keselowski’s challenge to the rest of the Sprint Cup field: “I can beat you with a broken leg.”

And he did.

Staying out on the track on old tires under a caution with 21 laps left in Sunday’s rain-interrupted Good Sam RV 500 at Pocono Raceway, Keselowski pulled away from Kyle Busch after a restart on Lap 185 of 200 to secure his second victory of the season—despite driving with a broken left ankle.

Keselowski, who was injured in a hard crash during testing Wednesday at Road Atlanta, kept Busch at bay over the final 10 laps. With Sunday’s victory—the third of his career—Keselowski’s fortunes took a dramatic turn with respect to the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

After missing the right pit strategy at Indianapolis with a four-tire pit stop at the end of the Brickyard 400 last weekend, Roush Fenway driver Greg Biffle and his team knew well enough to take two tires late in the Sprint Cup race at Pocono. And the strategy propelled him to a comfortable victory over Tony Stewart on Sunday.

"This one's for Jack, guys," Biffle said as he cruised through turn three on the last lap.

Carl Edwards finished third, followed by points leader Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin.

"We had a couple of really key two-tire stops that got us up front," said Biffle's crew chief, Greg Erwin.

It was a stirring victory for a struggling Roush Fenway organization, made even more poignant by the fact that owner Jack Roush was seriously injured when he crash-landed his jet last Tuesday in Wisconsin. Roush was not at the track, but followed the race from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, where he is recovering from significant facial injuries he suffered in the crash.

Denny Hamlin passed Clint Bowyer with 10 laps to go and then held off Juan Montoya for his first win of the year and the third of his career at Pocono. As it turned out, Denny Hamlin was right but not without a struggle, and not without a heavy heart.

Having said Friday that he expected to win the Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway, Hamlin charged to the front from the sixth position with 13th laps left in Monday's rain-postponed race and ended a 50-race drought in the Sprint Cup Series.

After beating Juan Montoya to the checkered flag by .869 seconds, Hamlin wept in Victory Lane, overcome with emotion in the aftermath of the recent deaths of his grandmother, Thelma Clark, and the mother of tire specialist Patrick Mullen at Joe Gibbs Racing.
