The fightcard promoted by Golden Boy will be aired live on HBO PPV. Both belts will be on the line, and both boxers have tasted defeat in their last outings. Will Diaz be able to improve on his last performance and regain his standing as the world’s best lightweight, or will the 36 year old Marquez show that age is just a number and retain his titles?
Marquez vs. Diaz II
One of Mexico's greatest warriors, Mexico City's Juan Manuel Marquez has won world titles in the featherweight, junior lightweight and lightweight divisions over the course of a 17-year pro career that will undoubtedly land him in the Hall of Fame. Winner of six of his last eight bouts, with his defeats coming to Floyd "Money" Mayweather and via controversial decision to Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao, "Dinamita" is still on top of his game at the age of 36, and he's eager to remind Juan Diaz of that fact on July 31.
A pro since the age of 16, 26-year-old Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz has practically grown up in the fight game and he's apparently learned his lessons well, as he held the world lightweight title for over three years from 2004 to 2007. Now, looking to regain the title on July 31, the fighting pride of Houston, Texas will be coming with all guns blazing to Las Vegas, where he is 4-0 in his career.
2010 Marquez vs Diaz Fight Results
In an action-packed fight that approached their 2009 classic, Juan Marquez and Juan Diaz slugged it out for 12 rounds Saturday night. But in the end, little changed from their previous fight. Marquez' superior boxing skills, quickness and a powerful uppercut gained him a unanimous decision to retain his WBA, WBO and Ring Magazine lightweight titles at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
Marquez, who won the first fight by a ninth-round knockout on Feb. 28, 2009, in Houston, but hasn't fought since a bad loss to Floyd Mayweather last September, showed that the long layoff did not hurt him much. He consistently caught Diaz with lethal combinations, opening up a nasty cut inside Diaz' mouth that required 10 stitches. Marquez didn't escape unscathed, either, getting poked in the eye twice by the thumb of Diaz' glove that resulted in his right eye being nearly swollen shut.
Diaz won two of the first three rounds, but from then on it was all Marquez (51-5-1, 37 KOs), who, as he's been known to do, seemed to gain strength in the later rounds. Marquez won by scores of 116-112, 118-110 and 117-111.
