Amir Khan vs. Marcos Maidana in a Junior Welterweight Showdown

WBA Light Welterweight Title: 12 Rounds
The deep junior welterweight class heats up, when British superstar Amir "King" Khan (23-1 17 KOs) returns to the United States for his second consecutive bout to defend his World Boxing Association (WBA) 140-pound World Championship against ferocious Argentinean knockout artist and WBA Super Lightweight Interim World Champion Marcos Maidana (29-1, 27 KOs) at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, December 11, 2010. The highly anticipated bout will be televised live in the United States on HBO's World Championship Boxing.
Maidana will be the hardest punching fighter Khan has faced since losing by first round KO to Breidis Prescott in 2008. Khan, the younger man by four years at age 23, may be quicker (and he can also hit with fierce accuracy and snap himself, don’t forget) but, as talented as he is, he has been cursed with a shaky chin. This will never go away, even if Khan has vastly improved his defence.
Amir "King" Khan (23-1, 17 KOs), already has sailed to the heights of the amateur and professional boxing world, however he is far from finished on his quest to becoming the best of his era. An accomplished amateur who earned a Silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics at just 17 years old, the Bolton, England native took the professional game by storm in 2005 and with the exception of a brief bump in the road in 2008 when he was upset by Breidis Prescott, Khan has since been unstoppable. A World Champion since 2009, when he defeated Andreas Kotelnik in July of that year, Khan has since defended his crown twice, stopping Dmitriy Salita (TKO1) and Paul Malignaggi (TKO11) in impressive fashion. Now he's ready for his greatest challenge in Maidana.
Maidana won his interim WBA World Championship after his TKO over "Vicious" Victor Ortiz. He has successfully defended the crown in three subsequent fights. Maidana can potentially create major problems for Khan. He is capable of quick-burst attacks that could surprise the British standout. In addition, there are not many fighters who respond to getting hit or hurt like Maidana. Anyone who saw him dump Victor Ortiz mere seconds after getting dropped himself knows how well Maidana responds to adversity. Khan will have to fight the most mentally-alert fight of his career.
The idea here is to crown a preeminent champion at 140 pounds. The 4 best fighters in the division are getting it on, with Tim Bradley and Devon Alexander tangling earlier next year, with the winner of both fights squaring off to crown a real champ. The winner of this mini-tournament will add a few great names to his resume, while being crowned the top dog in a division crackling with talent.
The Boxing Pick: Look for Khan to open some eyes with this performance. Maidana will do well to get to the final bell in what will become a bit of a lopsided fight in the last 3-4 rounds. I like Khan by wide unanimous decision.
Khan vs. Maidana Fight Results
Khan retained his WBA belt on scores of 114-111, 114-111 and 113-112. This was a terrific fight, not so much because it was all that even (I had it a wider 115-110 for Khan), but because we saw two guys and pretty much everything they can do, and every flaw they have displayed in 36 minutes.
Khan (24-1, 17 KO) looked sensational early on, even flooring Maidana (29-2, 27 KO) with a brutal body shot combo in the first round. The shots were nasty, and Maidana's face showed the pain. He doubled over and went down. But he got up, and after relentlessly hounding Khan and walking through Amir's best shots, Maidana finally cracked Khan perfectly in the 10th round, which led to three minutes of a wobbling Amir Khan surviving the onslaught.
