The Road To The World Title continues for rising welterweight contender Mike Jones (21-0-17 kOs), of Philadelphia, Pa, puts his unbeaten record and his North American Boxing Association (NABA) and North American Boxing Organization (NABO) titles on the line, in a scheduled 12-round contest against Irving Garcia, of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, on Friday July 9, at Boardwalk Hall with the first fight at 7:30pm. Showtime will televise the two main fights as part of its popular ShoBox series, The New Generation.
Mike Jones vs Irving Garcia
The 27-year-old, nearly 6-foot-1 Jones is coming off of last month's fifth-round knockout of 31-year-old Hector Munoz (18-3-1, 11 KOs, ) of Albuquerque, New Mex., which was also contested at Boardwalk Hall. This will be Jones’ fifth consecutive fight in Atlantic City and his first as a headliner at Boardwalk Hall.
Prior to meeting Munoz, Jones scored February's 10-round, unanimous decision over Puerto Rico's 29-year-old Henry Bruseles (28-4-1, 15 KOs) that was contested at Atlantic City's 1,527 capacity Bally's Park Place Hotel and Casino Ballroom.
Garcia, 31, could be Jones’ toughest test. His 17-4-3 record includes eight knockouts and a controversial loss to world-rated Luis Carlos Abregu, of Salta, Argentina, in his last fight one year ago in Santa Ynez, CA. Garcia had Abregu down twice and the fight was even on the scorecards (28-28, 28-28, 27-29) when Abregu dropped him in the fourth round and the ref stopped the contest.
Prior to the Abregu match, Garcia had earned a 10-round decision over Chris Smith, of New York.
A pro since 1998, Garcia has a few souvenirs of his own: Puerto Rican Junior Middleweight Title; WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation welterweight title; WBC Latino welterweight belt. He is undefeated in five scheduled 12-round fights.
Antwone Smith Vs. Lanardo Tyner
Also, Welterweights Antwone Smith, of Miami, FL, and Lanardo Tyner, of Houston, TX, will meet in a scheduled 10-round under card fight at Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall.
Smith, 23, is 18-1-1, 10 K0s, and he is rated No. 13 by the IBF. A pro since 2006, Smith has defeated Jerome Ellis, Norberto Gonzalez, Richard Gutierrez and Henry Crawford.
In his last fight April 10 in Sunrise, FL, Smith knocked out Franklin Gonzalez with a body shot in the third round on the Andre Berto-Carlos Quintana card.
Tyner, 34, is 23-3, 14 K0s. Originally from Detroit, Tyner turned pro in 2004 and has beaten Kenny Abril, Leo Martinez and Gilbert Venegas. He also went 12 hard rounds with Mexican knockout sensation Saul Alvarez, losing by decision last year in Mexico.
This is a big fight for both men since Showtime would like to match the winner with the winner of the Jones-Garcia contest.
Expect a night awesome betting lines and of toe to toe boxing action.
