Greenbrier Classic

Greenbrier Classic

Greenbrier Classic The PGA TOUR announced that they have entered a six-year agreement, through 2015, whereby the historic West Virginia resort will sponsor and host The Greenbrier Classic. The Greenbrier Classic is the latest addition to the PGA FedExCup Tour that will be played for the first time on July 28-31, 2011 on The Old White Course at The Greenbrier resort. The tournament brings professional golf of the highest level to White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

The Greenbrier Classic replace the Buick Open, which used to be played in Flint, Michigan.

One of the best known luxury resorts in the United States, The Greenbrier has established a high-profile involvement with professional golf.

The Greenbrier has had considerable involvement with professional golf over the years. The course was built in 1924 and renovated by Jack Nicklaus in 1977, played host to the 1979 Ryder Cup Matches as well as the 1994 Solheim Cup Matches. The tournament also played host to Champions Tour tournaments from 1985-87.

Measuring 7,000 yards and playing to par 70, The Old White Course was originally designed by Charles Blair MacDonald and most recently underwent an extensive renovation by Lester George to return it to its original design, reopening in 2006. In preparation for the tournament, Minimal course modifications are expected to add a couple of tees and an enhanced practice facility in preparation for the tournament.

2010 Greenbrier Classic Results

2010 Greenbrier Classic Results From the beginning, it was obvious that if someone didn't shoot 59 in the Greenbrier Classic, then they had missed a good chance to join history. The Old White Course at the Greenbrier Resort was short (7,035 yards) by PGA Tour standards. It had wide fairways, relatively light rough and soft greens. It took four rounds, but Stuart Appleby, who hadn't won in four years, shot 59 Sunday to make up seven shots on third-round leader Jeff Overton to win by a stroke. Appleby becomes the fifth player to shoot 59 on the PGA Tour, the second to do it the final round and the third to win.

"I was chasing Jeff," said Appleby, who finished at 22 under par, "but at the same time I was trying to make birdies because I was running out of holes. I knew if I was going to catch Jeff, I had to make birdies. I couldn't lay up on any holes."
