Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500
Sun, April 3, 2011
Martinsville Speedway
Martinsville, VA
The Goody's 500, once named the DIRECTV 500. The race has been run under a few other names since its inception in 1949, but has included the Goody's name in the title from 1996 to 2000, and then again from the 2007 event to the present.
This week, the boys head to Southwest Virginia for the half-mile track known as "The Paper-Clip." Martinsville Speedway is the shortest track on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Circuit. The Perfect Paperclip boasts 800-foot-straights, slightly-banked 12-degree turns, and a wild, trading-paint, push-and-drag experience that should produce some of the most exciting racing of this season. Although its layout does not allow for high speeds, it almost always produces numerous lead changes along with lots of bumping and some inevitable crashes.
The Martinsville Speedway is 263 miles of heart pounding action, and is one of two races held at the very popular short track of Martinsville Speedway; the other being the Tums Fast Relief 500 held annually in October.
The Goody's Fast Relief 500 will attract a full field of Sprint Cup regulars, including several NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers who are contending for the title of champion. There is nothing more exciting than to see stock cars zooming over 200 mph. Some of these drivers might have egos, but once they hit the gas pedal, it s all about winning the race.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. had the end of his long winless streak in his grasp, then could only watch as Kevin Harvick took it away from him.
After posting his first win of the season last week at Fontana, Harvick repeated his Happy Dance again Sunday, taking the Goody's Fast Relief 500 checkered flag at Martinsville Speedway. Earnhardt Jr. finished second and Kyle Busch third.
For Earnhardt, the drought is still on. Earnhardt led most of the last 10 laps and momentarily gave his fans cause for celebration and reason to think Junior's futility streak would end at 98. Instead, Harvick crushed Junior's fans.

Denny Hamlin took the unconventional route toward earning his second consecutive victory at Martinsville Speedway on Monday, winning the rain-delayed Goody's Fast Pain Relief 500 after relinquishing the lead with seven laps left to pit for tires with teammate Kyle Busch.
He made up nine spots over the final two restarts for the win, followed by teammate Joey Logano and Jeff Gordon, who led the final green. "It was an eventful day for us," said the Virginia native, who started 19th in a race that went 508 laps. "I didn't think it was going to be this hard or that dramatic at the end. Nonetheless, it's a good feeling."
Winning Monday's race required a radical remedy by crew chief Mike Ford, who had Hamlin pit for tires while leading with seven laps remaining in regulation. That gutsy call ultimately paid off as Hamlin muscled his No. 11 Toyota Camry from ninth to fourth on subsequent restarts before passing Ryan Newman and front-runners Jeff Gordon and Matt Kenseth in a wild green-white-checkered flag finish.
