Food City 500 Racing History
Despite its small size, Bristol is among the most popular tracks in NASCAR due to its distinct features that include extraordinarily steep banking, an all concrete surface, two pit roads and amphitheater-like seating. With the fast speeds and the short track, things can happen quickly and this Sunday's 500 laps can become more a race of survival than a race filled with strategy. Egos are bruised and friends lost over this race.
Having been a constant on the NASCAR calendar since 1961, the Food City 500 is not only one of the top events of the season, but also one of the proudest to be held on the half-mile oval at the legendary Bristol Motor Speedway. Because of its extreme banking and short length, the Food City 500 and Sharpie 500 are less races of pure speed than ones of strategy. Drivers are forced to think ahead rather than react with their foot. You'll also see a lot of bump and run at Bristol, leading to epic battles for a prime spot in front. Previous Food City 500 winners include Jeff Gordon, Jeff Burton and Kyle Busch.
After racing at Bristol the drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will finish off their March schedule in the Goody's Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway at the end of March and April will then feature NASCAR events at Texas, Phoenix, and Talladega.
2011 Food City 500 Results
Kyle Busch needed to bounce back from a difficult "home event" at Las Vegas two weeks ago - which saw his championship position take a battering after an early accident and exit from the race. And he couldn't have asked for a better place to recover at than Bristol Motor Speedway, one of his favourite and most successful venues.
Kyle took the lead after pit stops on lap 429 and proceeded to hold off Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson to win his second weekend sweep of NASCAR series events in a row at Bristol. It's Kyle's 20th Sprint Cup career win and his first of the 2011 season, and gives his Sprint Cup standing an eight place rebound back up to 6th spot, while his brother Kurt takes over the early lead for the Chase.

Johnson led the race early but Kurt Busch dominated most of the day, when the caution came out with 18 laps to go Busch and Johnson came to pit road and took four tires, but Greg Biffle, Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards and Tony Stewart took only two. Johnson was able to get past Busch and the rest of the field on his way to Victory Lane in Thunder Valley.
