Nonito Donaire vs Gerson Guerrero (WBA interim junior bantamweight championship)

Nonito Donaire will fight a 12-round interim WBA super flyweight title fight against Mexican Gerson Guerrero (34-8-0, 26 KOs) on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at Las Vegas Hilton, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Also on the fight card will be former two-division world champion Gerry “Fearless” Penalosa (54-7-2, 34 KO’s) against another former two-division world champion Eric Morel “Hands of Steel” (41-2, 21 KO’s) of Puerto Rico in a WBO bantamweight title eliminator and hard-hitting Bernabe Concepcion who is now being handled by pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and his adviser Michael Koncz taking on Marion Santiago (21-1-1, 14 KO’s) also of Puerto Rico in a ten-round faceoff of world title challengers.

Nonito Donaire has not been in the ring, sence his last battle against Rafael Concepcion, when he beat Concepcion (13-4-1, 8 KOs) by 12-round unanimous decision winning the interim WBA Super Flyweight Title on August 15, 2009 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Donaire (22-1, 14 KOs), a native of General Santos City, Philippines who resides in San Leandro, Calif., is in his second reign as world champion. Donaire burst upon the scene winning the Upset of the Year with the Knockout of the Year, at the expense of previously undefeated International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan in 2007. Leading on all scorecards through the first four rounds, Donaire uncorked his vintage punch, “The Pinoy Noir,” known for its silky smooth delivery and powerful finish. After three title defenses, Donaire vacated the title this year to capture the WBA interim super flyweight title, winning a 12-round unanimous decision over Rafael Concepcion in August. Riding an eight-year, 20-bout winning streak, 13 by knockout, he is a consensus Top-10 pound for pound fighter. He is now trained by former IBF junior lightweight champion Robert Garcia.

Donaire is one of five Filipino world boxing champions, joining seven-division titlist Manny Pacquiao, newly-minted WBC light flyweight kingpin Rodel Mayol, IBF light flyweight supremo Brian Viloria, and WBO minimumweight holder Donnie Nietes in the elite roster.

Little is known about his next opponent, Guerrero (34-8-0, 26 KOs). The Mexican with the alias “El Nene" is coming off a 10th round TKO win over compatriot Enrique Quevedo last June in Mexico City. The fight was for the vacant NABF super flyweight title and also served as WBC super flyweight eliminator.

Guerrero (34-8 26 KOs), of Mexico City, has won 76% of his fights by knockout. He has won NABF, FECARBOX, WBO Latino and Mexican titles in the flyweight and super flyweight divisions. Unbeaten in 2009, he enters his challenge of Donaire on the heels of winning a WBC super flyweight title elimination bout, a ninth-round TKO of Enrique Ouevedo in June. He is currently world-rated No. 3 by the WBC and No. 10 by the WBA.

Nonito Donaire vs Manuel Vargas Fight Results

Nonito Donaire knocked out last-minute replacement Manuel Vargas in the third round of their fight Saturday night.

Donaire controlled the bout throughout before flooring Vargas for good with a solid right uppercut at 1:33 in the third.

"It was a matter of relaxing and working my game plan," Donaire said. "I went side to side, leading with the jab, then landed that hard uppercut."

Donaire, the WBA interim super flyweight champion, was scheduled to fight Gerson Guerrero. But Guerrero failed his pre-fight physical, paving the way for Vargas.

"It was a crazy week," Donaire said. "It didn't matter who I fought, I simply tried to figure him out."
