The Donaire-Narvaez world title tilt will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark, beginning at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast.)
Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Doanire
Donaire, is a native of General Santos City, Philippines, now living in the Bay Area of San Leandro, Calif. He won a pair of bantamweight belts in February when he scored a mammoth second-round knockout victory, when he knocked out defending WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel, ending Montiel's 25-bout winning streak while also claiming his third world title in as many weight divisions. He enters this fight riding a nine-year, 25-bout winning streak, which includes an IBF/IBO flyweight title knockout victory of defending champion Vic Darchinyan, and a fourth-round blasting of former WBA bantamweight champion Wladimir Sidorenko last December. Ten of Donaire's last 11 victories have come by way of knockout.
Donaire, is probably fighting for the last time as a bantamweight before he moves up in search of bigger fights. He plans to move up to the 122-pound junior featherweight division and eventually to featherweight. Donaire, ultimate goal right now appears to be getting him to featherweight, where he could face the likes of Yuriorkis Gamboa, Juan Manuel Lopez, Orlando Salido, etc.
Omar Narvaez
Narvaez, 36, of Cordoba, Argentina, a two-time Olympian, is southpaw who will be making his debut as a full-fledged 118-pounder. Narvaez held a flyweight belt from 2002 until 2009, making 16 defenses, before vacating to move up in weight. He won the vacant WBO junior bantamweight title in May 2010, pitching a near shutout to win a unanimous decision over Everth Briceno. He has successfully defended his new title three times, all by unanimous decision, against opponents who had a combined record of 54-2 when he fought them.
He is a good boxer, but likely not near Donaire's level, and he's been a home fighter in Argentina for years, only occasionally leaving his base and never fighting in the United States to date. He defended the belt three times, beating Victor Zaleta, Cesar Seda and Irina William. None of them are well known fighters, and Narvaez has probably been able to retain his WBO belt for some time due to the weakness of the super flyweight division is now.
Donaire is 5-foot-7 with designs on the featherweight division while Narvaez, who has a reputation for having a solid chin, is 5-3 and not considered big for a junior bantamweight.
