Canadian Open
2011 RBC Canadian Open
When: July 21-24
Where: Shaughnessy G&CC
The Canadian Open makes one of its rare appearances west of the Rockies this weekend when it returns to the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver, BC, on July 18-24 2011. It has been six years since the Open was in BC and the Shaughnessy course presents a challenge to all but the most skilled golfers. Shaughnessy course is a wooded parkland course in the classic style. The fairways are long and narrow, and surrounded by rough that is much less forgiving than the famously understated first cuts of that famous course in Augusta, GA.
When betting on the RBC Canadian Open golf odds there can be many factors to take into consideration. Usually I try to focus on players that are playing well or what players are better suited for the course.
The course at the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club has proven to be a pretty tough one in the past to negotiate, with the first hole being incredibly tough. Putting has also been a major challenge on the course, but the greens should be a little more welcoming this time around than it was back in 2005, however, flat and even are not words that you are going to associate with the greens here, so for your Canadian Open golf betting, you really need to look for someone who is going well in the putting stats.
This tournament has prize money of $5.2 million and of that $918,000 goes to the Winner. This tournament makes available a place for American Golfers to win a country's championship. Why? Because it's easy to qualify for this tournament and normally has a lower quality type of participation. It gives those who would not likely win a major tournament that opportunity to win a national open.
The RBC Canadian Open tournament consists of a field of 156 professionals and amateurs made up of the following:
- PGA Tour exempt players
- Non-exempt players who qualify through regional qualifying
- Canadian Amateur champion
- Players given exemptions by Golf Canada
All 156 players tee up on Thursday and Friday with a cut to the lowest 70 scores and ties after Friday's round. The remaining 70, plus ties, will battle it out in stroke play until a winner is determined on Sunday afternoon. In the case of a tie on Sunday, a champion will be decided in a sudden death playoff.
Since its inaugural event in 1904, the RBC Canadian Open has played host to the world's best golfers. The PGA Tour RBC Canadian Open is the second-oldest tournament on the PGA Tour schedule (not including the British opens) behind only the BMW Championship (formerly known as the Western Open). The Canadian Open is conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA).
The Canadian Open is commonly regarded as the most prestigious tournament never won by the great Jack Nicklaus, a 7-time runner-up. The list of Canadian Open legends also includes three-time winners Sam Snead (1938, 1940-41) and Lee Trevino (1971, 1977, 1979), with Greg Norman (1984, 1992), Tom Weiskopf (1973, 1975), Curtis Strange (1985, 1987), Nick Price (1991, 1994), and Jim Furyk (2006-07) all having won twice.
In 2009, at Glen Abbey Golf Course in Oakville, Ontario, Nathan Green dug deep to come up with two pars in a playoff against Retief Goosen to score his first PGA Tour win. This not only put Green in position to not only make the Presidents Cup team, but also to secure a prime spot in the PGA Tour Playoffs for the FedExCup.

Sean O'Hair turned around the worst week of his most trying golf season on an even tougher golf course. Not even he imagined it was possible just four days ago. Coming off a frustratingly close missed cut at the British Open, and in the midst of his worst season on the PGA Tour, O'Hair "played horrific" in Wednesday's Pro-Am on the eve of the Canadian Open.

Carl Pettersson rallied to win the Canadian Open on Sunday for his fourth PGA Tour victory, following his tournament-record 60 with a 3-under 67 for a one-stroke victory over Dean Wilson. Pettersson, the 32-year-old Swede who went to high school and college in North Carolina, finished at 14-under 266 at hilly, tree-lined St. George's. "I still can't believe I won the tournament," Pettersson said two days after making the cut by a stroke after opening rounds of 71 and 68. "I know it's difficult to shoot another low one after a round like that, so I was just trying to downplay it. I just tried to stay calm and (said), 'Whatever happens today, happens.' "
The 40-year-old Wilson, playing on a sponsor exemption, shot a 72 after opening with three consecutive 65s to take a four-stroke lead into the final day.
