The 140th Open Championship
When: July 14th - 17th, 2011
Where: Royal St Georges Golf Club
The British Open Championship takes place in the United Kingdom and is the only major championship that is not played on U.S. Soil. It is also referred to as the Open Championship. The British Open is the eldest of the Four Major Golf Tournaments and is the third one played during the calendar year. The US Masters takes place in April, the US Open in June and the PGA Championship takes place in August. Some of the most notable winners of the British Open include Bobby Jones - the last amateur to win, Harry Vardon, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods and two time Champion Padraig Harrington will be trying to take home the Claret Jug once again. 2011 marks the historic 140th British Open and once again it is set to be played at the oldest golf course on the globe, Royal St. George's Golf Club in England. From the 14th - 17 July the British Open will be returning to Kent hosted again by Royal St Georges Golf Club in Sandwich Kent. Royal St Georges Golf Club will host the The Open for the 14th time, the first was back in 1894 and the last time The British open was held in Kent was back in July 2003.
Royal St Georges Golf Club was initially designed by Dr Laidlaw in 1887, it's original design and use was for London golfers who generally played in overcrowded and unmanaged courses to come and relax and enjoy their round of golf. The Royal status was given to St Georges by King Edward VII in May 1902.
Over the years the cruel links course conditions have tamed even the greatest of golfing legends including the former world number 1 "Tiger woods" who in 2003 finished joint 4th 1 over for the tournament and just to give you an idea of the difficulties these players face, Bill Rogers, Greg Norman and Ben Curtis are the only three players who have ever won The Open at Royal St Georges under par for 72 holes.
The winner of the British Open receives a generous prize of more than $8.3 million and receives the coveted Golf Champion Trophy, also known as the Claret Jug, awarded since 1871. While most players would play in this event for free because of its prestige, it doesn't hurt that the British Open, also has largest purse in golf.
British Open Golf Playoff
At the end of 72 holes, if golfers are tied, players play a four-hole playoff beginning with the 1st hole, then the 16th through 18th. If still tied, the players repeat the 18th hole until a champion emerges.

British Open Golf Odds and History
The British Open is the oldest of the four major championships in men's golf. Each year the event is hosted by one of several prestigious golf clubs in Britain; however, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A) administers The Open regardless of its site.
It is always played on a links course. The British Open Championship is played in July and is the third major to take place each year, after The Masters Tournament and the U.S. Open, but before the PGA Championship. It has been an official event on the PGA TOUR since 1995, which means that the prize money won in the Open by PGA Tour members is included on the official money list. In addition, all Open Championships before that date have been retrospectively classified as PGA Tour wins and the list of leading winners on the PGA Tour has been adjusted to reflect this.
British Open trophy called the "Claret Jug
When the Championship began, the winner was presented with the Challenge Belt, now the Claret Jug or the proper name, The Golf Champion Trophy, is presented to each year's winner of The Open Championship.
The trophy awarded to the winner of The Open Championship is officially known as the Championship Cup, but it is much more commonly called the "Claret Jug" because, well, it's a claret jug.
Claret is a dry red wine produced in the famous French winemaking region of Bordeaux. The British Open trophy was made in the style of silver jugs used to serve claret at 19th Century gatherings.
But the winner of The Open Championship hasn't always received the Claret Jug as the trophy. The first handful of winners were awarded a belt. That's right, a belt. Or "Challenge Belt," as it was designated at the time.
The first Open Championship was played in 1860 at Prestwick (now called Royal Prestwick, it's in Troon, Scotland, just down the road from Royal Troon), and that year also marked the first awarding of the belt.
The belt was made of a wide, red Morocco leather and was adorned with silver buckles and emblems.
1873 winner - Tom Kidd - was the first to be awarded the Claret Jug.
That original Claret Jug from 1873 has permanently resided at the R&A since 1927. The trophy that is presented to the British Open winner each year is a copy of the original, which the winner gets to keep for a year before returning it to the R&A to be passed on to the next champion.

Louis Oosthuizen lifted the oldest trophy in golf, a silver claret jug with his name etched alongside Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, and the other South African winners like, Gary Player, Bobby Locke and Ernie Els. After shooting a 71 on Sunday, Oosthuizen made only two bogeys over the final 35 holes in a strong wind that swept across the Old Course. He closed with a 1-under 71 for a seven-shot victory over Lee Westwood, who came in with a second place finish. Oosthuizen, finished at 16-under 272 and became the first player since Tony Lema in 1964 to win his first major at St. Andrews.
