WBC Super Featherweight Champion Marco Antonio Barrera will put his Tilte on the line against two time champion Juan Manuel Marquez on Saturday, march 17, at Mandalay bay. On March 17, WBC super featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera will attempt to make his fifth title defense when he squares off against Juan Manuel Marquez. The bout, which takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevad and now Manny Pacquiao is saying that he may wait for the winner of Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Marquez before he fights again. If Barrera’s victorious, he has a chance to avenge his loss against the mighty Pacquiao. That would mean bout on April 14th with Jorge Solis is now on hold. Both of these Mexican fighters have been amongst boxing’s elite for over ten years. Barrera is a huge star who’s been a major attraction in the sport throughout most of his career, having fought many high profile fights most notably, his sensational trilogy with fellow countryman, Erik Morales.
As for Juan Manuel Marquez, despite his amazing boxing talent, Marquez has spent most of his career under the radar as an unknown commodity; he never had the type of high-profile fights that helped define Barrera’s greatness.
Indeed, both boxers have exhibited ‘fearless’ attitudes throughout their respective careers. That they are both willing to square off helps illustrate this fact, especially when one considers the winner will likely take on the daunting challenge known as Manny Pacquiao.
Two of the undercard fights have been announced: Daniel Ponce De Leon vs Gerry Penalosa and Demetrius Hopkins vs Steve Forbes.
Golden Boy Promotions handles both fighters, and has called this fight “Fearless” which is rather fitting.
Barrera vs. Marquez Fight Results
In a battle between two of Mexico's best, WBO featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (47-3-1, 35 KOs) took the WBC super featherweight title from defending champion Marco Antonio Barrera (63-5, 42 KOs) on Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Resort Casino in Las Vegas. Barrera seemingly had the edge over the first half of the fight. In a controversial round seven, Marquez rocked Barrera and had him in trouble. Suddenly a big Barrera right hand dropped Marquez. He then walked over and hit Marquez with a right hand while he was down. Referee Jay Nady did not credit Barrera with a knockdown and deducted a point from Barrera for the foul. Down the stretch, Marquez often beat Barrera to the punch and won by scores of 118-109, 116-111, 116-111.
In what might be a sequel on its way to another legendary trilogy, and after a dramatic and controversial war that’s already been earmarked as “Fight of the Year,” Marquez-Barrera II is already on the table. In the closing moments of the post-fight press conference, Golden Boy president Richard Schafer awarded the media, and those in attendance, with the news that HBO had penciled in Marquez-Barrera II for September 16, 2007.
