TPC Zurich Classic Golf Tips

How will the players fare on the challenging TPC Louisiana is still up in the air. The TPC will challenge the players with it's length while still demanding shotmaking. The course has been tweaked in recent years to enhance playability yet retain difficulty. The par-3 third hole measures 221 yards and tests the player with mounding front of the green and water in the back and right. Players will need to be up too speed early to tame this hole.

The finishing two holes will certainly play center stage should the tournament come down to the wire on Sunday. Seventeen is another lengthy par-3 at 215 yards, with a re-shaped green that will make par a good score. Eighteen is a middle length par-5 at 589 yards that is a true risk/reward hole with fairway mounding that will test the golfers to lay up in the right area should they decide not to go for the green in two.

Even though the Zurich Classic is being played on a new course, don't be quick to bet against players who have had success here in years past. The course has been good to golfers looking for their first win however, five players have earned their first PGA victory in the last six years here.

Zurich Classic Golf History

New Orleans has played host to a PGA Tour tournament since 1938, when the Greater New Orleans Open Invitational was introduced at City Park Golf Club. The tournament was not held from 1949-1957,then returned to City Park before moving to Lakewood Country Club in 1963 and then to English Turn Golf & Country Club in 1989. It sense has been relocated to the Tournament Players Club of Louisiana and the golf course was designed by Pete Dye, with input from player consultants Steve Elkington and Kelly Gibson.

2011 Zurich Classic Results

2011 Zurich Classic Winner Bubba Watson overcame a three-stroke deficit over the final eight holes of regulation and beat Webb Simpson in a playoff Sunday in the Zurich Classic for his second PGA Tour victory of the year and third of his career. He also had a little luck. Simpson remained winless on the PGA Tour and was left to wonder what might have been if not for an unusual one-stroke penalty on 15 when his ball moved as he was addressing it on the green, less than a foot from the hole. Watson opened the final playoff hole with a 329-yard drive that narrowly stayed out of the water and landed in a fairway bunker. He hit his second shot — a 7-iron — 210 yards to the green on the 568-yard, par-5 18th. Simpson's second shot landed in a bunker short of the green, near the lip, and he blasted out to 12 feet. After Simpson narrowly missed his birdie putt, Watson made a 3-foot birdie putt for the victory, which earned him $1,152,000 and moved him up from No. 16 to No. 10 in the world.

2010 TPC Zurich Classic Results

In 2010 Jason Bohn, made the Zurich Classic of New Orleans his second career victory, Bohn may have earned himself a new page of notoriety at TPC Louisiana. One day after a quiet 37th birthday celebration, Bohn on Sunday birdied three of his last four holes for a final-round 67. He finished 18-under, two shots better than runner-up Jeff Overton.

Jerry Kelly was hungry for a victory. More importantly, he was just plain hungry. Following his Wednesday pro-am at the Zurich Classic, Kelly revealed -- no, bragged -- that he had put away three-dozen char-grilled oysters at the turn. Which was nothing, really, considering his all-time personal record of 58 in one sitting.

During a week in which French Quarter eateries are often more populated by PGA Tour players than the driving range, Kelly's appetite was finally satisfied with a final-round 71 that ended with a par on the 72nd hole to win by a single shot.
