Outlasting the nastiest side of Pebble Beach Golf Links and all its devilish hazards — tiny, harsh greens, penalizing rough and thin fairways — McDowell closed with a 3-over-par 74 to finish as the only player to match par for the tournament. With a final-hole, two-putt par from 25 feet, McDowell held off Gregory Havret of France by one shot to win the 110th edition of the national championship.

In doing so he became the first European to win the U.S. Open since Tony Jacklin in 1970. The par-71 course played to an average of 74.88 strokes in the final round.
